Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Can't Bear to Watch Replays of Fateful Foul on P.J. Washington
With a one-point lead and two seconds left in Saturday night's Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals, the Oklahoma City Thunder players were doing everything to keep the Dallas Mavericks from scoring and winning.
Unfortunately for them, Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander fouled Mavericks forward P.J. Washington on a shot from beyond the arc, which gave him three free throw chances and ultimately, an opportunity to win the game.
OKC coach Mark Daigneault challenged the call, but the review resulted in the call standing. Washington went on to make two-of-three free throws to win the game and advance the Mavericks to the Western Conference finals.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with a team-high 36 points, felt regretful of what transpired on the court in those last seconds.
“I shouldn’t have fouled him," Gilgeous-Alexander said, via The Athletic's Anthony Slater. "It sucks. Obviously if I had the moment back, I wouldn't have fouled him."
Reporters then asked if he's seen the replay of the foul. Gilgeous-Alexander admitted he never wants to see the footage.
"Nah, I can't look at it," Gilgeous-Alexander continued. "I don't want to look at it. I fouled him clearly because they reviewed it and I fouled him, so there's no need to look at it."
The Mavericks will go on to play the winner of the Minnesota Timberwolves–Denver Nuggets series in the Western Conference finals.
