Dallas Mavericks' Grant Williams Praises San Antonio Spurs Ahead of Opener
We are just days away from opening night for the San Antonio Spurs, where fans will finally get to see Victor Wembanyama play in his first ever NBA game in front of the home San Antonio crowd.
On Wednesday night, the Frost Bank Center will be packed out for the matchup between two Texas teams when Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving Grant Williams and the Dallas Mavericks come to town. Williams, formerly a Boston Celtic, had high praise for the young Spurs, who expect to improve off last season's 22-60 record.
"We can't just credit Victor for the Spurs' success either," Williams said on the Mavs Stepback Podcast. "They're healthy now, and Devin Vassell has been playing very, very well I've seen. Keldon Johnson is going to be a huge add to them. Jeremy Sochan, as his confidence continues to grow and he knocks down shots, he'll hopefully continue to add to that starting power forward position. And then they have a good guard in Tre Jones, and the guys off the bench with vets like Doug McDermott, Zach Collins."
Williams, a 6-6 power forward, stands 10 inches shorter than the 7-4 Wembanyama. Even so, it can be expected that Williams will be guarding the rookie Wednesday in some sets due to his past of guarding Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo in the Eastern Conference semifinals for the Celtics.
With improvements in many parts of the roster, head coach Gregg Popovich and the Spurs hope to prove Williams correct, that trail starting with a win over the retooled Mavericks.
The Mavs and Spurs are set to tip off at 8:30 on Wednesday night.
