The San Antonio Spurs lost to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night by 40 points, 123-83. Outside of Cedi Osman, there wasn’t a bright spot for the Spurs, who certainly feel like they can do better.

Despite only scoring 14 points in the outing, Devin Vassell has surpassed Keldon Johnson as the Spurs’ best player and will hold that title until Victor Wembanyama takes it from him. With his good play comes a leadership role, and Vassell does not mince words.

"Credit to them. They have been together for a couple of years. We just got to play better. We got to come out better. We got to move on,” Vassell said postgame. “We have another game against Phoenix and we'll be better."

The Phoenix Suns will host the Spurs on Tuesday and Thursday, and tote a three-headed monster of Bradley Beal, Devin Booker, and Kevin Durant. The Spurs will have to be hot out of the gate on both ends of the court to stand a chance.

That being said, a fire has been lit. Vassell is yet to play for a Spurs squad that finishes with a winning record, but the arrival of Wembanyama has made changing that only a matter of time. Vassell has expressed that he is growing tired of being uncompetitive.

"Even last year I hated losing. I hate losing now. I always hate losing,” Vassell said. “We'll watch some film, we'll get better and it sucks losing by 40 points." The Spurs are going to lose this season, probably more than they win, but Vassell is right. No matter how young a team is, losing by 40 is never a good outcome.

Fans should expect the Spurs to lose to older, more established teams like the Clippers, and they will probably lose to the Suns in both games, but Vassell has made it clear that blowout losses like Sunday’s game will not fly in the locker room.
