Why Giannis to Spurs Rumors Are 'Filler'

Giannis Antetokounmpo has been linked to the San Antonio Spurs in trade rumors, but the Milwaukee Bucks star isn't ready for a deal just yet.

SAN ANTONIO - After losing in the first round of the playoffs last year, Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is at the center of trade chatter once again.

Before winning the 2021 NBA Finals, many believed Giannis would become the next small-market star to leave for brighter lights for a team that would be more aggressive in acquiring stars for a championship. However, the Bucks (with many San Antonio Spurs connections, including former assistant coach Mike Budenholzer), found a way for it to work and they won a championship.

But two years later, Giannis is back on the hypothetical market and was recently mentioned by Heavy as a potential "dark horse" target for the Spurs.

"Two other darkhorses are out there, too: San Antonio and Toronto," Heavy.com's Sean Deveney wrote. "The Spurs are not on the Thunder’s level, asset-wise, but they are loaded with cap space and could be a threat to sign Antetokounmpo if rookie big man Victor Wembanyama lives up to his hype. They could likely package enough picks and young players to give Milwaukee a trade package at least worth considering."

Be prepared for this each time a star decides he may leave a town.

With Victor Wembanyama in the mix, if he shows even half the game to match the hype this season, the Spurs will get mixed into the rumor mills with the usual big market suspects.

The Spurs have some assets and lots of cap space so mentioning them makes sense.

Spurs fans would likely love The Greek Freak in San Antonio but any talk of him at this point is filler and supremely preliminary.
