NBA Draft: Spurs Trade Up for Kentucky PG Cason Wallace?
The San Antonio Spurs hold the No. 1 pick in this year's NBA Draft, but there's a chance they could walk away with another first-round pick.
There has been chatter about the Spurs trading back into the first round to take another high-profile prospect, potentially at the point guard position.
If San Antonio is indeed looking to upgrade at point guard, then look no further than Kentucky guard Cason Wallace at No. 10.
In 32 games as a freshman, Wallace averaged 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.0 steals per game while shooting just under 35 percent from 3-point range in 32 minutes per game.
Wallace is a combo guard who specializes on the defensive end. Point blank, Wallace hounds his opponents up and down the floor. His 6-foot-8 wingspan gives him the ability to defend bigger wings with his elite instincts and toughness.
Offensively, Wallace has shown flashes of being knockdown shooter from outside and having the ability to get open as an off-ball guard. With continued work on his handle and comfort as a lead playmaker, Wallace can become a very well-rounded offensive threat.
If the Spurs were to trade up for a point guard like Wallace, it's because they really like him. Teams like the Orlando Magic at No. 11, Oklahoma City Thunder at No. 12 and Toronto Raptors at No. 13 are all potentially looking to trade their picks. San Antonio has two second-round picks, but trading up for a point guard makes sense for the Spurs.
Tre Jones is a restricted free agent, while Malaki Branham is the only real option at point guard on the roster at the moment. Adding another rookie to develop at that position alongside Victor Wembanyama could be crucial for the team's development as a whole.
