NBA Free Agency: Spurs Re-Sign 'Brilliant' Tre Jones?

The San Antonio Spurs must decide whether to commit to Tre Jones this summer.

The San Antonio Spurs have a big decision to make this summer on whether to retain third-year point guard Tre Jones.

Jones has improved in each of his first three seasons, but faces unrestricted free agency this summer. The Spurs, with oodles of cap space, can afford to keep Jones, and they should look into it.

"Tre Jones is a brilliant offensive caretaker," Bleacher Report writes. "The gulf between his assists (6.6) and turnovers (1.6) is canyon-esque, and he is making strides as a scorer (career-high 12.9 points per game). His three-ball isn't there yet (career 27.1 percent), but his free-throw shooting (83.7 percent across three seasons) gives hope that it will be someday. If he sounds like someone the Spurs should keep around, you're probably right."

That being said, Jones has not proven that he can be a significant part to a contending roster as of yet. Would the team want to re-sign him when there are potentially other options where the grass is greener?

"However, that could change overnight, depending on whom they draft," Bleacher Report writes. "If they take Scoot Henderson, for instance, they might be better off letting Jones walk to maximize Henderson's touches."

There are other options in free agency, like Fred VanVleet or Kyrie Irving, but a high-billing point guard likely won't sign with a rebuilding Spurs team. Henderson is probably the only player that would put Jones' Spurs return in serious jeopardy. However, the Spurs won't know if they will have the opportunity to draft Henderson until the lottery on May 16.
