Spurs Blown Out by Thunder as Victor Wembanyama, Chet Holmgren Battle
Under the national TV spotlight, the San Antonio Spurs hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday. And a matchup of one of the best teams in the league against one of the worst, rookie stars Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren didn't disappoint as the headliner to ESPN's "Rivalry Week," but it ultimately had no impact in what turned into a blowout.
Thunder star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander posted a game-high 32 points along with six rebounds and 10 assists as Oklahoma City blew past Wemby and the Spurs in a convincing 140-114 win.
Wembanyama posted a team-high 24 points while adding 12 rebounds, four assists and four blocks. He made a potential statement in the Rookie of the Year race, which will inevitably come down to him and Holmgren, who finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
With the game already in hand in the fourth quarter, Wemby and Holmgren went back-and-forth on both ends, trading buckets and throwing down some emphatic dunks in the process.
