San Antonio Spurs Ex Cam Payne Signs with Milwaukee Bucks
A former member of the San Antonio Spurs has a new home.
According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, the Milwaukee Bucks are signing Cameron Payne to a deal.
Payne, 29, averaged 10.3 points per game for the Suns this past season. He was traded to the Spurs earlier this offseason in a salary dump deal by the Suns. The Spurs waived him last month so he could explore other opportunities.
Payne will play for his fifth NBA team in nine seasons. He was drafted No. 14 overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder back in 2015, but quickly found himself lost behind Russell Westbrook at the point guard spot. Payne's inability to crack significant playing time resulted in a trade to the Chicago Bulls during his second NBA campaign.
He played in just 67 games for the Bulls across three seasons and nine with the Cleveland Cavaliers when it looked like his career was approaching a premature end.
Payne then signed with the Suns, playing in just nine games during the 2019-20 season. However, he carved out a role as Chris Paul's backup point guard and began to thrive in Phoenix, playing a key part in the team's 2021 Finals run. In Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals that year, Payne scored 29 points in a win while starting in place of Paul, who was injured.
Now, Payne brings that experience to a contending Bucks team, which just acquired Damian Lillard in a three-team blockbuster deal with the Portland Trail Blazers.
