In light of all of the San Antonio Spurs' "Hellos" to new roster additions, there hasn't much room for "Goodbyes."
Normally, that's a good thing. No franchise wants to see its players gone in the same way its players don't want to see their teammates move on. But preventing that just isn't possible, and after adding Victor Wembanyama, Sidy Cissoko, Cedi Osman and Reggie Bullock, San Antonio had a tough decision to make.
That decision ended up being waiving third-year forward Lamar Stevens, who has yet to sign elsewhere, as a way to free up roster space. That made the Spurs' job slightly easier, too, as they didn't have to guarantee his contract into next season.
But now, another decision must be made — and several rumors have been tossed around about who will and won't make San Antonio's final roster.
"The [Spurs] have Khem Birch, and he could be cut or moved because they have a lot of big men right now," HoopsHype wrote of the Spurs' current roster situation.
Birch is an interesting candidate for San Antonio's roster cutdown for two main reasons. As the site mentioned, he does fall into a demographic that is suddenly nearing capacity — mainly due to Wembanyama.
Between him, Zach Collins, Charles Bassey, Sandro Mamukelashvili and now even Dominick Barlow, big men in San Antonio are in no shortage, and Birch doesn't seem to fit into that group any longer — especially because he didn't suit up for any games last season.
That's not to say he can't contribute scoring and rebounding at the level he did for Toronto or Orlando if given the opportunity, but the Spurs would likely prefer to stick with the players they've already seen in action most recently, especially younger players like Barlow, who just signed a new two-way deal with San Antonio.
Birch unfortunately makes for a prime candidate for the Spurs' next wave of roster cuts, which will likely include him and one other player to meet requirements, and as any other player, the "Goodbye" might be difficult for the locker room.
That doesn't mean it isn't a decision for the better. Only time can tell that, but at least the Spurs have until October to officially decide who stays and who goes.
