Spurs Sign Charles Bassey to New Deal: Full Details
The San Antonio Spurs are making second-year center Charles Bassey an official part of their future.
Per reports Tuesday from Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Spurs have signed Bassey to a new four-year, $10.2 million deal with a guarantee of $5.2 million.
Bassey, who was originally on a two-way deal, had been dominant with the Spurs' G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs, in between call-ups to the NBA. He's now set to be a mainstay on the roster as the Spurs continue through a rebuilding season.
Once a product of St. Anthony's Catholic High School in San Antonio, his arrival to the Spurs on Oct. 24 through a two-way deal seemed like a storybook connection. And according to Bassey, things couldn't have gone any better after he showed early on what he could do in a 111-93 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Nov. 11 in what was his fourth game as a Spur.
"Like I said man, this is a perfect spot," Bassey said after the win. "This is a young team, I'm still learning everything out there. I wish I started preseason training camp with them, but everything's going smoothly. I'm just so locked in with my team."
In that win, Bassey posted just five points, but was a menace on the boards, pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with four assists and four blocks.
In Monday's loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, he tallied six points and eight rebounds, as he's now averaging 4.7 points and 5.3 rebounds this season.
Still a work in progress, the Spurs clearly believe in what Bassey can bring to the future of the franchise.
