The San Antonio Spurs are still without a coach going into the 2023-24 season. However, there is reason to believe that Gregg Popovich will return for his 28th season in San Antonio.

Popovich, 74, had his contract expire following the end of the season but there have been talks to get him on a new deal that will be very flexible for the Hall-of-Famer.

"Popovich is expected to sign a three-year contract that will pay him in the neighborhood of $14 million per year," a league source said via SpursTalk. "The contract will also allow him to opt out after either of the first two seasons."

Should Popovich sign a three-year contract worth $14 million per year, he would once again become the highest-paid coach in the league, surpassing his former player Monty Williams, who recently signed a six-year, $78.5 million contract, giving him an average annual value of $13.1 million, which was slightly higher than Popovich's previous price tag.

SpursTalk says that drafting Victor Wembanyama could give Popovich motivation to continue coaching in San Antonio. Popovich has been rather quiet about his future, but he mentioned earlier in the season that he was still having "fun" coaching the team despite its losing record. Now, with Wembanyama in the fold, one can only imagine how much more fun Popovich would have coaching the team ... and he could do it while getting paid more than anyone in the NBA.
