San Antonio Spurs Guard Devin Vassell Reveals Advice From Kevin Durant
Whenever San Antonio Spurs young star Devin Vassell was seen working out and playing pickup games with Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant this offseason, Spurs fans understandably got excited.
Vassell's game has rapidly improved over the course of his first three seasons in the league after being selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. But working out with a player as experienced and successful as Durant could have great implications for what may be in store this season.
Vassell and a number of other young players in the NBA were seen in a private gym working out with Durant back at the end of July. At the San Antonio Spurs media day, Vassell finally addressed the workout and what advice Durant had for him.
"First off, that was kind of surreal for me," Vassell said. "KD was probably one of my favorite players when I was growing up, so to be able to get workouts in and play pickup was huge. He told me a bunch of stuff, and gave me some advice, but at the end of the day he told me just to be me. Don't let anybody change the way I play, and to play with pace, play confident, and to be a great teammate."
Vassell is gaining a lot of attention right now, as he just signed five-year, $146 million extension, so he needs to be able to live up to that. But getting workouts in and getting advice from one of the greatest players to ever play the game is a good start, and could bode well going into this season for the rising star.
