San Antonio Spurs Devin Vassell Suffers Injury vs. Phoenix Suns
San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell injured his left groin in the first half of Thursday's 132-121 win over the Phoenix Suns at Footprint Center and didn't return to the game.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said after the game that Vassell will get an MRI due to left groin tightness and that he expects him to miss time.
"He'll get an MRI tomorrow (Friday), and I'd imagine we'll lose him for a little while," Popovich said.
Popovich said that Vassell tested his groin out in an attempt to return to the game, but was unable to play on it.
"The groin is one of those things where it can take a while, and he wasn't sure he thought he could play," Popovich said. "But I told him go out there and warm it up and to be honest with me if it loosened up, how it felt, and he said he just couldn't go on it."
It's unclear when exactly Vassell suffered the injury, though he headed to the bench with 1:05 left in the second quarter and reportedly went into the locker room early before halftime. He finished with 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting and 3 of 3 from behind the arc.
The Spurs led 75-55 at half, a position they hadn't been in through four full games this season. However, Vassell didn't return to the court coming out of the locker room, and was ruled out for the rest of the game in the third quarter.
Vassell missed 44 games last year after undergoing mid-season knee surgery. He was off to a hot start through the first four games this season, as he entered Thursday's game as San Antonio's leading scorer at 20 points per game and minutes leader at 34.8.
Without Vassell, Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama took over down the stretch before finishing with a career-high 38 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
Now down one of their best players for an indefinite amount of time, the Spurs will look to improve on their two-game winning streak when they host the Toronto Raptors on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CT.
