Spurs Signing Paul George Would 'Make Life Easier' for Victor Wembanyama
The San Antonio Spurs will be expected to build around star center Victor Wembanyama in order to contend for a championship in the coming season. In order to do, the team will need to acquire another star to place beside him while continuing to add through the draft, free agency or with trades.
The Spurs don't usually tend to blow fans away with trades that bring in All-Star talent, but they'll have the cap space this summer to potentially sign one instead.
Could Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George be an option?
The third pillar of L.A.'s Big Three with Kawhi Leonard and James Harden, George has sights set on his first-career championship this season with a Clippers team that is facing some now-or-never title expectations. Los Angeles (36-17) is currently No. 3 in the Western Conference as the All-Star break comes to a close.
But once this season is over, George could have the chance to test the open market by rejecting his player option and opting into free agency.
Due to this, Bleacher Report paired George with the Spurs on its list of top-three free agent targets for each team in the league. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday were the other two players listed for the Spurs.
"George obviously doesn't bring the playmaking LeBron does, but his outside shooting and perimeter defense would still make life easier for Wembanyama on both ends," Bleacher Report wrote.
This season, George, 33, is averaging 22.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists while hardly looking like he's lost a step.
LeBron, Wemby Pairing with Spurs? Free Agency Blockbuster
However, as he continues through his 14th season in the NBA, George could be nearing the end of his career and likely won't want to wait around for an opportunity at a championship if the Clippers come up short once again this season.
Signing him to pair alongside Wemby could certainly vault the Spurs up the Western Conference standings as soon as next season, though it's best to not get hopes too high.
If the opportunity to sign George does present itself though, the Spurs will need to have put together a roster that proves they're ready to win.
