San Antonio Spurs' Jeremy Sochan Talks Point Guard Changes: 'It Is What It Is'
The San Antonio Spurs tried to make it work. But amid a 17-game losing streak, it's become clear that the "experiment" with Jeremy Sochan at point guard still needs some polishing up.
San Antonio and coach Gregg Popovich had Sochan come off the bench for the first time this season in Wednesday's 102-94 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He finished with six points and two rebounds in 22 minutes, as the Spurs had Devin Vassell become the ball-dominant guard in the starting lineup.
Sochan started in Monday's 93-82 road loss to the Houston Rockets, but it was Malaki Branham and Vassell who filled the guard spots.
After that loss to Minnesota, Sochan talked about the lineup change, saying "it is what it is."
"I think it's just experimenting. So, it is what it is," Sochan said. "It depends on what the coaches want, depends on how the team is going to be, and we will just see from there."
Sochan still has key role for this team, and wasn't truly being "benched" to begin with. Hidden under all the questions surrounding his ability in a point guard-like role has been some solid performances and stat lines.
Sure, there's some ups and downs, but the Spurs wouldn't be competitive in some of these tight losses without his contributions. In the 137-135 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Nov. 30, he posted a career-high 33 points on 12 of 14 shooting to go along with eight rebounds, six assists and a steal in arguably the best game of his young career.
3-Point Woes Stifle Spurs As They Fall Short in Houston
Regardless, Sochan and the rest of the team clearly have some growing to do, something they'll get another chance at when the Spurs host the Los Angeles Lakers tonight at 7 p.m. CT.
