Spurs' Keldon Johnson Off the Bench? Why It Could Happen
The San Antonio Spurs will look much different next season thanks to the colossal addition of rookie star Victor Wembanyama. But his arrival could subsequently knock someone out of the starting lineup.
Could Keldon Johnson be the victim?
If that ends up happening, he doesn't seem to mind, and is focused on putting the team first as the Spurs work their way back toward contending for the postseason.
“Yeah. I just want to win," Johnson said via Express-News reporter Tom Orsborn. "Whatever I got to do to win, I am looking forward to that, so we’ll see how it goes."
Along with his 22 points per game, Johnson averaged five rebounds and nearly 3 assists on the season. While his 3-point shooting took a sharp decline from his previous season, his defense saw improvement, which can be a much-needed piece to the puzzle off the bench.
It's rare for one of the top 30 scorers in the league to take a bench role for a team that won very little this past season, but Johnson's selflessness could be seen as something that could strengthen the Spurs as they enter the Wembanyama era.
Johnson begins his four-year extension in the 2023-24 season, where he will be the highest-paid player on the team.
