Spurs Trade No. 33 Pick to T-Wolves: Details

San Antonio Spurs general manager Brian Wright got busy on the phones and made a draft-night trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

After shocking absolutely no one by selecting Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall pick, the San Antonio Spurs were expected to continue adding to their 2023 NBA Draft haul on Thursday night.

Instead, Spurs general manager Brian Wright got busy on the phones and made a draft-night trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Per reports from ESPN, the Spurs have traded the No. 33 overall pick in Thursday's draft to Minnesota in exchange for two future second-round picks. As of now, it's unclear which year(s) these picks will be for.

The Spurs selected G League Ignite forward Leonard Miller with the pick, though he's now on his way to Minnesota instead.

Per Yahoo! Sports, the Spurs were reportedly making calls to potentially move back up into the lottery prior to the draft. Wembanyama's Metropolitans 92 teammate, Bilal Coulibaly, was the reported target, but he went off the board at No. 7 overall to the Indiana Pacers before being traded to the Washington Wizards.

"The San Antonio Spurs have made calls in search of acquiring a second lottery pick, according to league sources, and many opposing front offices are of the mind that Coulibaly is their target to pair with Wembanyama yet again," Yahoo! Sports wrote.

It's likely that Wright attempted to move back up into the lottery, but will now instead shift focus to the team's next pick in the second round.

The Spurs are back on the clock with the No. 44 overall pick.
