LOOK: Spurs' Victor Wembanyama Tries Boxing
SAN ANTONIO - My friend James Leija has one of the coolest gigs in San Antonio.
The former world boxing champion better known as "Jesse" James spends every summer teaching the finer skills of ring pugilism to whoever the San Antonio Spurs draft in the first round. It's a tradition that dates back to Tim Duncan in 1997.
More as a way to teach toughness, get to know a fellow pro athlete in San Antonio and just basically because it's fun Leija spends his Augusts and Septembers working with rookie Spurs.
While Duncan was a bit of a challenge to show boxing skills to because of his height, the 5-5 Leija says 7-4 Victor Wembanyama has been a different kind of beast.
His head just barely above Wemby's waistline, Leija looks like a child facing up the new Spurs phenom from France. Put boxing gloves on the two men and what a humorous photo we got this week courtesy of Leija's Instagram account.
According to Leija, it was all business as Wemby not only took it seriously but flashed some skill as well. Whether any of this translates into winning basketball remains to be seen. Seeing Wembanyama in the silver and black, boxing with a local legend did serve as another reminder of how fortunate the organization is to have the kid.
Training camp isn't far off. Let's get ready to rumble.
