Spurs Schedule Released: How Many Wins?
There's tons of hype surrounding the San Antonio Spurs due to the arrival of Victor Wembanyama, but there's some who don't think the rookie star will make a major difference for the team in the win column this upcoming season.
Bleacher Report projects that the Spurs will be 23-59 in the 2023-24 campaign, which would be just one win better than the 22-60 record the team finished with this past season.
One could argue that this win projection is a bit too low for the Spurs this season. Despite that they are likely still a few years away from making regular playoff appearances again, getting only one extra win after adding a No. 1 pick Wembanyama would be considered a disappointment. If his value and impact is for real, then surely he'll make the Spurs into a potential 30-win team with the ceiling of contending for a play-in spot.
But B/R thinks differently. Here's what the site had to say about the projection:
"Expect some growing pains for Wembanyama, especially on offense," Bleacher Report writes. "Having said that, his length and fluidity alone could make him a plus on defense right away. And combining him with Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell could give the Spurs some of the league's most interesting young lineups. It'll take more than that to push 30 wins in the West, though. The conference is, as always, loaded. Some team will have to get squeezed, and the still-developing Spurs are probably a good candidate for that."
Wembanyama will have a lot of doubters to prove wrong this season, and the Spurs' success will likely hinder on whether or not he does this successfully.
San Antonio begins its season on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at home against the Dallas Mavericks.
