San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama Has 'Endless Potential' Says Teammate
San Antonio Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama has no ceiling to his potential according to teammate Doug McDermott.
"The potential is endless," McDermott said. "He is very driven. He works his tail off & he has the mindset. I’ve never seen someone as a rookie so comfortable in themselves and their work ethic. It’s just great we have him here because it’s a perfect spot to be his true self."
Wembanyama has been as advertised so far in the preseason. In the first preseason game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, he shot 8-for-13 for 20 points, five rebounds, one block and two steals in 19 minutes. Then, against the Miami Heat, he went 10-of-15 from the floor for 23 points, four rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
The Spurs drafted Wemanyama with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft out of France where he played for the Metropolitans 92. He was talked about before the draft as a generational prospect, the consensus No. 1 overall pick, and maybe the best basketball prospect since LeBron James in 2003.
San Antonio won the NBA Draft Lottery after going 22-60, which tied with the Houston Rockets for the second-worst record in the NBA behind the Detroit Pistons at 17-65.
Now, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich gets the chance to coach one more generational player after having coached players like Tim Duncan, David Robertson, Kawhi Leonard, Manu Ginobli and more in his storied career. Popovich has been the head coach in San Antonio since 1996 and is the longest-tenured active coach in the NBA.
Wembanyama and the Spurs will start the regular season off at home against the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 25 at 8:30 p.m.
