Victor Wembanyama Prioritizing Spurs Over FIBA World Cup
SAN ANTONIO - The only San Antonio Spurs player at the World Cup is role player and owner of new contract extension Sandro Mamukelashvili repping his Georgians.
It's the first-ever World Cup appearance for Georgia, who plays in Group F along with Cape Verde, Slovenia and Venezuela. For a historic moment in the country's basketball history, it's hard for Mamu to pass it up.
This means that the Spurs can essentially go into the season with fresh legs. Victor Wembanyama could have played for France in the World Cup, but he is choosing to prioritize his rookie season with the Spurs ... and next year's Olympics in Paris near where he grew up.
Not that he wouldn't feel pressured or the personal desire to participate regardless of location but there is no way the Spurs would discourage Victor Wembanyama from making his Olympic debut in his home country. He is supremely proud to be French and the hype and awe surrounding France's games will be amazing.
All the Spurs can do is cheer and hold their breath. But that's another year away and the current matters at hand are getting ready for training camp and season one of Wemby.
