Going from the French professional league to the NBA at the age of 19 is difficult enough, but doing it with the entire world pointing cameras and microphones at you makes it even more daunting. On top of that, the San Antonio Spurs' first overall draft pick and brightest star–despite not playing a game yet–Victor Wembanyama, has to make the adjustment while moving from the Paris suburbs to San Antonio, Texas.

San Antonio is one of my favorite cities in the Union, but it is certainly different from the cafe-lined boulevards of Paris. Wembanyama, however, appears to be making the adjustment seamlessly. He has taken this summer to “disappear from the media” and enjoy what Texas has to offer, but even without the media monitoring his every move, Spurs’ fans can’t help themselves, and I don’t blame them. The Silver and Black loyal were shocked and thrilled when “Wemby” visited Southtown 101, a sports bar in San Antonio, to kick back and watch some football. Sounds like a Texan to me.

Despite wanting a break from the spotlight, Wembanyama appeared to soak up all the positive attention in what can only be described as an impromptu photo op.

While I am positive no one served Wembanyama a beer, I’m sure most of the patrons would have gladly bought him one. Growing up watching fellow Frenchman Tony Parker win title after title with the Spurs, it’s safe to say that Wembanyama is right where he wants to be.

Already adorning a George Strait hat and hanging with locals, it’s not too early to suggest that Wemby might follow in the footsteps of Parker, Duncan, Robinson, and Ginobili and stay in the Alamo City for his entire career (wait, Parker played for the Hornets?) and establish residency in Texas after he retires. Based on the tape, it looks like San Antonio would be thrilled to make room for a larger-than-life full-time resident.
