Spurs Officially Select Victor Wembanyama No. 1 Overall in NBA Draft
The San Antonio Spurs have finally seen their 2023 NBA Draft dreams realized on Thursday, as the team officially selected coveted French superstar Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall pick.
After winning the draft lottery for the third time in franchise history, it was only a matter of waiting, not guessing before the Spurs officially sent their card in to select the 7-4 center.
Wembanyama, 19, just wrapped up his season with Metropolitans 92 in France, and will quickly transition toward life in the NBA. Luckily for the Spurs, he's just as excited to join the five-time champions as they are to have him.
"If I had to choose one franchise to get the number one pick I would've chosen San Antonio," Wembanyama said, via the The Old Man And The Three podcast. "It would be a no-brainer."
The Spurs now add Wembanyama to the fold in hopes he brings some of the same championship success that the franchise's two other No. 1 picks managed to achieve. NBA Hall of Famers Tim Duncan and David Robinson helped the Spurs reach historical prominence, meaning Wembanyama has some major expectations already on his shoulders.
Sports Illustrated's Draft Digest's scouting report on Wembayama details why he might be able to become the superstar that everyone expects:
"Just looking at Wembanyama, it’s easy to see why he’s a generational prospect," SI wrote. "He stands at 7-foot-4 with nearly an 8-foot wingspan. When you combine that elite size with the skill Wembanyama has, he has the upside to one day be the best player in the entire NBA.
The Spurs officially have their guy. Now the fun begins for San Antonio, which will be hoping to add a sixth banner to the rafters at the AT&T Center due to Wembanyama's arrival.
