Spurs vs. Dallas Cowboys: Who Wins Championship First?
SAN ANTONIO - I got roped into a silly debate on my YouTube show on whether the San Antonio Spurs will win another championship before the Dallas Cowboys do.
This debate ensued after I made the point that one could argue that the Spurs will indeed win a title before the Cowboys based on the drafting of Victor Wembanyama and the near three decade dubious history of the football team from Dallas.
My cohort, Sam "Biggest Puma" Freas, called my opinion "insane" and literally threw his hands in his face, nearly knocking off his cap. He points to the Spurs coming off a lottery bound trudge and the Cowboys being loaded with stars and coming off another 12 win season. I simply mentioned the Spurs culture. Corporate knowledge is how head coach Gregg Popovich often refers to the secret sauce that the Spurs have within the walls of their headquarters.
The Spurs do things the right way. All the time. They make all the difficult decisions. All the time. They put in the work. All the time. The Cowboys are a franchise that is the Kardashian television show of American sports. Their billionaire owner insists on holding a ridiculous state of the team address on the first day of training camp every year. It's embarrassing.
It is the flaw in the corporate knowledge that holds back the Cowboys that no amount of 12 win regular seasons, coaching changes, quarterback changes or Jerry Jones' age can fix. Perhaps the Cowboys will one day figure out the intangibles that annually plague them in January.
Perhaps the Spurs, coming off their worst statistical season ever, will need a lot more time than we all expect for them to get back to the top. But after over 15 years of covering the Spurs, I can be certain that their plan is most likely a better one than whatever Mike McCarthy has cooked up. In basketball, all it takes is two stars and you're a contender. The Spurs can't be far away from that. Wemby, the Spurs superior leadership mixed with the reality TV drama in Dallas makes my opinion sort of an easy one.
Time may prove me wrong but my thoughts are most certainly not insane.
