Trae Young Trade Rumors: Spurs Interested in Hawks All-Star?

The San Antonio Spurs could be interested in trading for Atlanta Hawks All-Star guard Trae Young this summer.

The San Antonio Spurs were quiet at this year's trade deadline, making just one small move in the process by dealing Doug McDermott to the Indiana Pacers.

However, that may not be the case this summer. The Spurs have a chance to be far more aggressive both in free agency and on the trade market.

Yahoo! Sports insider Jake Fischer is reporting that the Spurs could be a landing spot for Atlanta Hawks All-Star guard Trae Young if he were to be made available.

"One spot other than Los Angeles that’s repeatedly been mentioned by NBA figures as a potential home for Young — if Atlanta were to ever consider parting with its franchise face and All-Star lead ball-handler — is San Antonio," Fischer writes. "The Spurs do lack a clear-cut pick-and-roll partner for rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama."

The Hawks are in a position of limbo in the middle of the Eastern Conference that's unable to truly contend with their current roster. Despite being an Eastern Conference finalist in 2021, the Hawks have been unable to build off of that success. They hoped that trading for Dejounte Murray from the Spurs in 2022 would solve the problems, but the team has made little progress since then.

This move from the Spurs wouldn't guarantee a spot in the playoffs, but it could make San Antonio more competitive as they activate Victor Wembanyama. Giving Wemby a point guard to work with in the pick-and-roll is vital to his success, and Young may be the right fit, providing space in the paint and elevating the Spurs' league-worst 3-point percentage.
