Three Potential Trade Destinations for Suns PG Chris Paul
With the disappointing playoff outcome from the Phoenix Suns after going all-in with the trade for Kevin Durant, Phoenix will be in a position to make some moves in the offseason.
They have already narrowed down their search for their new head coaching job, but that is just one of many problems to fix before next season. The Suns will reportedly be open to shopping both Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton.
Today, let’s look at three potential trade destinations for the Point God:
Chris Paul is well past his prime and it appears his role with Phoenix is no longer stable. Despite his big name, he’s no longer a star and doesn’t really contribute much to the team anymore. Sure, he gets a lot of assists, but he’s not gonna win you any games at this point in his career. For both parties, it only makes sense to try and find Paul a new home.
Phoenix has until June 28 to fully guarantee his contract, which is reportedly expected to happen.
Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers are likely losing James Harden to the Houston Rockets in free agency and he will leave a huge hole left to fill. At this stage in his career, Paul is essentially just a worse version of current Harden.
That said, it would give Tyrese Maxey an opportunity to shine as the true second option and shift more focus back onto Joel Embiid. Newly-hired head coach Nick Nurse is rumored to be looking to run a team surrounding Embiid, making the need for a second superstar less substantial. With the exit of Harden, Paul could be a good fit. It’s just the looming issue of if they’ll be willing to take on Paul’s contract.
Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks are in a very similar situation to Philadelphia as they too could be dealing with a former Nets superstar leaving in Kyrie Irving. If Irving decides to leave, Paul could fill that role next to Doncic next season, perhaps creating a better fit with his willingness to pass the ball. This could give the keys completely to Luka Doncic, and let him run the course of his own team.
Los Angeles Clippers
Heading back to his former team in Los Angeles is still a very viable option. The Clippers have the resources to bring Paul in and he could pair nicely in a trio with Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, but this all depends on what they do with Russell Westbrook. If they decide to move on, Paul could be a great replacement and help lead a healthy Clippers team to a deep playoff run.
