Suns Top Timberwolves in Kevin Durant's Home Debut
PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Suns struggled at times but ultimately pulled through with a 107-100 win.
Heading into tonight, there were plenty of storylines to follow - but none greater than the home debut of Kevin Durant after missing stretches of time with a sprained MCL and recently a sprained ankle.
Durant initially got off to a shaky start - shooting just 2-11 to begin his night. However, he picked things up down the stretch (despite being on a minutes restriction) and finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
The Suns now have won three games in a row, the first streak since earlier this March. Phoenix emerges to 41-35 on the season and still have sole possession of the No. 4 seed. The Timberwolves' four-game winning streak was snapped tonight and they now fall to 39-38 on the year.
It was a back-and-forth game that featured lead changes on both ends through the entire four quarters. Minnesota led by as much as ten tonight.
Prior to the game, head coach Monty Williams preached the importance of dominating the glass against the Timberwolves.
“Their ability to get extra possessions is something that we know they practice. When you watch the film, it is evident that they send guys to the glass like we do. Keeping those big guys off of the glass or even guys that are not as big," said Williams.
"I think that is one of the top keys. They try to attack the paint like most teams, but they are more effective than most because they have big agile guys that can do it. We have to be able to guard the ball for at-least two dribbles.”
Though the Timberwolves won the rebound battle 54-48, the Suns were still able to partially control the paint with three blocks each from Deandre Ayton and Bismack Biyombo.
Karl-Anthony Towns had 20 points at halftime, where the Timberwolves carried a 51-48 lead into the locker room. KAT and Anthony Edwards combined for 56 points.
Unsurprisingly, it was Devin Booker who led the Suns in points with 29 of his own. Six Suns scored in double digits.
Minnesota turned the ball over 21 times.
Phoenix is back in action on Friday when the Denver Nuggets come to town.
