Monty Williams Reportedly Rejected Offer to Coach in NBA
Former Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams isn't in a rush to take any head coaching openings.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Detroit Pistons made a “big-money offer” to Williams but he reportedly declined it.
"League sources say that the Pistons, even after they failed to win the Victor Wembanyama Sweepstakes in the draft lottery, went through with their intent to make a big-money offer to Williams in hopes that the former Suns coach could be lured straight into a new job," said Stein.
"It appears that plan, which we revealed in the enclosed story from inside the Drawing Room at the draft lottery in Chicago last week, was unsuccessful. Williams has three years remaining on his Suns deal valued in excess of $20 million."
Williams coached the Suns from 2019-23 but was fired after losing in the second round to the Denver Nuggets. Through his four seasons as Phoenix’s head coach, Williams had a record of 194-115 and helped the Suns reach the NBA Finals back in 2021, where they ultimately lost to the Milwaukee Bucks. The following season, Phoenix established a franchise record for regular season wins.
Dwane Casey stepped down as Pistons head coach in April following the regular season as he will move into a front office role according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Some coaching candidates that have been linked to the Pistons coaching position are Bucks assistant Charles Lee, Toronto Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin and Miami Heat assistant Chris Quinn.
While the Pistons have not been a winning franchise over the past few seasons, their rebuild is finally starting to come together. The Detroit coaching job could be enticing as the roster is loaded with young talent such as Jaden Ivey, Killian Hayes, Cade Cunningham, Marvin Bagley III and James Wiseman.
The other teams still searching for a head coach include the Bucks, Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers.
