The NBA's free agent period is set to begin, and we've already seen a handful of decisions the Suns have made to set themselves up for the summer.
Suns Sign Udoka Azubuike
Woj: Free agent C Udoka Azubuike has agreed on a two-way contract with the Phoenix Suns, Zach Kurtin and Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports tell ESPN. He was the 27th overall pick to the Jazz in 2020.
Suns Sign Bol Bol
Woj: Free agent F/C Bol Bol has agreed on a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns. At 23, Bol had his best NBA season with Orlando: 9.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.1 blocks in 21.5 minutes. Another developing talent to join a deepened bench rotation.
Darius Bazley Signs With Nets
Woj: "Free agent F Darius Bazley has agreed to a one-year deal with the Brooklyn Nets, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul and agent Brandon Cavanaugh tell ESPN."
Bazley did not receive a qualifying offer from Phoenix and thus was made an unrestricted free agent before the process began. Last season, his contract AAV was $2.8 million. Bazley played in seven games for the Suns last season (43 total) and averaged 5.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.9 assists on 45.4% shooting.
Bazley (23 years old) joined Phoenix in February after he was traded from Oklahoma City in exchange for Dario Saric, a 2029 second-round pick and cash considerations.
Suns Re-Sign Saben Lee
The Phoenix Suns officially announced Saben Lee would be re-signed to the club on a two-way contract.
Lee had a qualifying offer placed on him ahead of free agency, making him an restricted free agent heading into the summer. Lee played in 25 games for Phoenix last season and averaged six points. 1.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists on 40.5% shooting from the field.
Lee joined Phoenix on a 10-day contract back on Jan. 11, where he eventually was signed to a second before being added on a two-way deal by the Suns on Feb. 1.
Suns Lose Torrey Craig to Bulls
Adrian Wojnarowski: "Free agent F Torrey Craig has agreed on a two-year contract with the Chicago Bulls, sources tell ESPN. Deal includes a player option. Craig averaged 7.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in 24 minutes for Suns last season."
Craig was an unrestricted free agent heading into the summer. Last season, his contract AAV was $5 million. Craig played in 79 games for Phoenix in 2022-23 and averaged 7.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists on 45.6% shooting, which includes 39.5% from three.
Craig (32 years old) was first acquired by the Suns via trade in March of 2021. He signed with the Indiana Pacers the ensuing offseason and was traded back to Phoenix in exchange for Jalen Smith and a 2022 second-round pick.
Eric Gordon Signs With Suns
Shams Charania: "Free agent Eric Gordon has agreed to a deal with the Phoenix Suns, sources tell @TheAthletic@Stadium. Massive get for the Suns.
"Phoenix has turned into a destination this offseason: Gordon considered multiple contenders — including more lucrative deals — before committing to Suns to join a bolstered roster around Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal."
Gordon was a name frequently mentioned with Phoenix, as the Suns were in search of shooting depth behind their star backcourt.
They now get that with Gordon after an already impressive start to free agency.
Jock Landale Signs With Houston Rockets
Shams Charania: "Free agent Jock Landale has agreed to a four-year, $32 million deal with the Houston Rockets, sources tell @TheAthletic, @Stadium. Agents Sammy Wloszczowski and Michael Lelchitski of @SIGSports negotiated the new contract for Landale."
Landale had a qualifying offer placed on him by Phoenix, making him a restricted free agent heading into the summer. His contract AAV last season was $1.2 million. Landale played in 69 games for the Suns last season, averaging 6.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and one assist per night on 52.8% shooting.
Landale (27 years old) initially joined the Suns via trade from the Atlanta Hawks, who acquired him in the deal for Dejounte Murray from the San Antonio Spurs shortly before moving him to the desert.
Suns Sign Yuta Watanabe
Shams Charania: "Free agent Yuta Watanabe has agreed on a deal with the Phoenix Suns, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.
"Around Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, Suns recruit a big wing pickup in Watanabe. 44.4 percent three-point shooter, depth in frontcourt and a reunion with Durant."
Watanabe was one of the most coveted players Phoenix wanted on the open market, and now they got him.
Suns Sign Chimezie Metu
Adrian Wojnarowski: "Free agent forward Chimezie Metu has agreed to a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns, sources tell ESPN."
Metu (26) can play center and power forward. He played 66 games for the San Antonio Spurs last season and averaged 4.9 points, three rebounds and 0.6 assists on 58.9% shooting.
Keita Bates-Diop Signs With Suns
Adrian Wojnarowski: "Free agent F Keita Bates-Diop has agreed to a two-year, $5M deal with the Phoenix Suns, co-head of @CAA_Basketball Austin Brown tells ESPN. Deal includes a player option. Bates-Diop will have a chance to earn a starting forward spot."
Bates-Diop was a player many Suns fans wanted them to target in free agency. he 27-year-old wing played in 67 games for the San Antonio Spurs last season, averaging 9.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists per night.
Damion Lee Re-Signs With Suns
Adrian Wojnarowski: "Free agent guard Damion Lee has agreed to a one-year deal to stay with the Phoenix Suns, sources tell ESPN. Lee is a two-year deal with a player option, sources tell ESPN."
Lee was an unrestricted free agent heading into the summer. Last season, his contract AAV was $2.1 million. Lee played in 74 games for the Suns last season and averaged 8.2 points, three rebounds and 1.3 assists per night on 44.2% shooting from the field, which included 44.5% from three.
Lee (30 years old) joined the Suns as a free agent last summer after winning the 2022 NBA Finals with the Golden State Warriors.
Suns Will Sign Drew Eubanks
Shams Charania: "Free agent center Drew Eubanks has agreed on a two-year deal with the Phoenix Suns, with a player option in second season, sources tell @TheAthletic, @Stadium. Eubanks is represented by agent James Dunleavy of Excel Sports."
This news came right after the Jake Fischer reported the Suns were expected to revoke the qualifying offer from Jock Landale, making him a free agent.
Eubanks (26) played in 78 games for the Portland Trail Blazers last season and averaged 6.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per night on 64.1% shooting from the field.
Josh Okogie Re-Signs With Phoenix
Chris Haynes: "Free agent guard Josh Okogie has reached an agreement to return to the Phoenix Suns, league sources tell @NBAonTNT, @BleacherReport."
Okogie (24 years old) was an unrestricted free agent heading into the summer. Last season, his contract AAV was $1.9 million. Okogie played in 72 games for the Suns last season and averaged 7.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists on 39% shooting.
Okogie initially joined the Suns as a free agent after the 2022 season after playing the first few years of his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Suns Retaining Cameron Payne
Suns are guaranteeing Cam Payne's total of $6.5 million salary for the 2023-24 season (reported by Duane Rankin)
Rankin: "Sources later informed The Republic on Thursday the Suns are fully guaranteeing the final year of his three-year, $19-million contract. The $4.5 million of the remaining $6.5 million on the final year was set to kick in Thursday."
Suns Exercise Ish Wainright's Option
Suns will be bringing back Ish Wainright for the 2023-24 season on his team option (reported by Shams Charania)
Charania: "The Phoenix Suns have exercised forward Ish Wainwright's $1.9 million team option to return for the 2023-24 season, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Suns currently at six players under contract entering free agency."
Suns Place Qualifying Offers on Jock Landale, Saben Lee
The Suns are placing qualified offers on both Jack Landale and Saben Lee (reported by Keith Smith)
Smith: "The Phoenix Suns have tendered a qualifying offer to Jock Landale and a two-way qualifying offer to Saben Lee, a league source tells @spotrac. Both players are now restricted free agents on July 1."
Suns Don't Place Qualifying Offer on Darius Bazley
The Suns refused to place a qualifying offer on Darius Bazley (reported by Michael Scotto)
Scotto: "The Phoenix Suns did not extend a qualifying offer to forward Darius Bazley, league sources told @hoopshype. The 23 year-old forward will enter the market as an unrestricted free agent after shooting 37.7 percent from 3-point range last season with the Thunder and Suns."
