Suns Coach Kevin Young to Interview for Rockets Opening, per Report
The Phoenix Suns are about to embark on a journey through the Western Conference playoffs - one they hope ends with hoisting the Larry O'Brien trophy in a parade through downtown Phoenix.
The Suns are manned by head coach Monty Williams, who has take over the program just a few years ago and has restored Valley basketball to its rightful place. That includes a run to the 2021 NBA Finals only followed by a franchise record 64 wins in the regular season.
Pieces come and go on a coaching staff, and it appears as if another assistant coach under Williams might be on the way out.
ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Houston Rockets are securing permission to interview Suns associate coach Kevin Young for their head coaching vacancy.
Young (41) began his coaching career in 2006 over in Europe. He joined the G League's Utah Flash in 2009 and spent eight years in the NBA's developmental league before joining the Philadelphia 76ers' staff in 2017. He and Williams were assistants together for the 76ers.
Young joined Williams' staff in 2020 as an assistant in Phoenix before eventually getting promoted to associate head coach in 2021.
The Rockets recently parted ways with coach Stephen Silas after declining to pick up his fourth-year option. Houston finished the year 22-60 and will be in contention to grab the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Other names set to interview with Houston are Kenny Atkinson and Adrian Griffin.
The Suns look to begin their postseason campaign against the Los Angeles Clippers this Sunday.
