Suns React to Miraculous Comeback vs Kings
PHOENIX -- How about those Phoenix Suns?
Who needs a roller coaster when you can simply tune into a game at Footprint Center, where the Suns often times flash potential to be the best team in the league while simultaneously possessing the ability to look like they've never touched a ball in their life.
Of course, that's simply colorful commentary, though the Suns have struggled to remain consistent this season for better or worse.
For last night - at least - it was better.
Phoenix found themselves down 20 points at various points of the night, and at times were showered with boos from their home crowd. It felt like the Sacramento Kings couldn't miss and the Suns couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat.
Yet Phoenix battled - and battled - and battled until they eventually took their first lead since the opening minutes of the game with under 30 seconds remaining.
The Suns ended the game on a 32-8 run to secure the miraculous win.
“We stayed in it. We stayed in it fundamentally, there was a lot of moments where our guys were struggling and were frustrated and we were getting our butts kicked quite frankly. Credit to the Kings, they played a great basketball game tonight; that team has a lot of fire power, and you have to match it and we didn’t have our best offensive first three quarters," Frank Vogel said.
"I thought KD (Kevin Durant), Bradley (Beal) and (Devin) Booker were all vocal in timeouts saying, ‘Come on, stay with it. Stay with it.’ Next play type of mindset and kept us engaged."
The comeback was propelled by Grayson Allen's 29 points (his nine three-pointers made tied a franchise record) and a strong fourth quarter effort, something the Suns aren't quite used to:
“We won a fourth quarter, finally. It took us being down twenty – whatever it was – but we won a fourth quarter. That was our focus and what we have been talking about was closing out games and winning fourth quarters," Allen said.
"Usually, it is us being up 10 or 15 and letting a team come back. We got on the other side of that tonight and won a fourth quarter. Hopefully we will not let ourselves get that far down a night. It was a good close out.”
The key switch made by Phoenix was utilizing a smaller lineup with Kevin Durant at center, allowing more shooters on the floor.
Slowly but surely the Suns cut into the massive deficit before a handful of Durant buckets iced the game for Phoenix's comeback.
“When you have momentum like that and can play a three- or four-minute stretch, without too many subs or adjustments; we kind of blitzed them there in the fourth, for those minutes and we were able to get the lead. They were super aggressive, they ended up fouling us late because they were getting a little frustrated," Durant said.
"If we pressure teams and don’t get down early, we will see what team we are. It is easy to be up 20, 15, 10 points the whole game and have everyone playing well, clapping, excited on their bench. Also, I think we got to start the games off even better than what they did, and our force needs to be better.”
The Suns return to action on Friday night when the New Orleans Pelicans play host.
