Suns Sign All-Star Guard
PHOENIX -- Former Phoenix Suns G Isaiah Thomas - who spent half of the 2014-15 season with the franchise - is reportedly returning on a 10-day contract, per the Athletic's Shams Charania.
Thomas was originally acquired by Phoenix in a sign-and-trade with the Sacramento Kings in the summer of 2014 on a four-year deal under the assumption that Thomas, Eric Bledsoe, and Goran Dragic could be the first legitimate three-guard lineup that works on a consistent basis.
The idea didn't work as the Suns had envisioned - and Thomas/Dragic were shipped out in separate deals at the trade deadline in 2015.
Thomas, 35, emerged as a legitimate MVP candidate for the Boston Celtics in the 2016-17 season before hip surgery stunted his career after being the centerpiece in the Kyrie Irving trade to Boston.
Thomas has spent time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, Washington Wizards, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, and Charlotte Hornets post-Boston - he was rostered on the Salt Lake City Stars of the NBA's G-League prior to the Phoenix signing.
Thomas brings career averages of 17.7 PPG and 4.8 APG back to the Valley for at least the next 10 days - Phoenix seems to be intrigued at the idea of a competition between the longtime NBA vet and current PG Saben Lee for the final roster spot ahead of the playoffs.
Thomas' contract will likely span from tomorrow's game against the Milwaukee Bucks until a matchup with the Denver Nuggets on March 27.
