Report: Suns Emerge as Potential Suitor for Kyrie Irving
The Phoenix Suns are looking to offload Jae Crowder as the NBA trade deadline approaches, and they might just get a superstar in return.
The Athletic's Shams Charania reports the Suns are one of three teams that have emerged as potential suitors for Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving, who just today demanded a trade. The Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers - a team that has previously expressed interest in Irving - were also listed.
This wouldn't be the first time people have connected the Suns and a superstar from the Nets, as many believed Phoenix was a frontrunner to land Kevin Durant over the summer before Brooklyn ultimately kept him.
The Nets seemingly hushed any drama involving Irving (who requested a trade over the summer as well) and Durant, but the latest news has only thrown both names into the fire of trade speculation with just under a week until the Feb. 9 deadline.
The Suns have been rumored to potentially address their point guard situation with 37-year-old Chris Paul on the downslope of his career.
Phoenix is one of the few contending teams who have full control of their draft capital moving forward, as they have all of their first-round picks for the foreseeable future.
This season, Irving is averaging 27.1 points per game on 48.6% shooting with 5.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds per night as well. His cap hit for the 2022-23 season is $36.9 million and he will be an unrestricted free-agent this summer.
Brooklyn reportedly offered him a contract extension but he declined.
