Windhorst: 'Good Chance' Suns, Cameron Johnson Reach Extension
Phoenix Suns fans love Cameron Johnson, and so does the organization.
Since being drafted in 2019, Johnson has steadily improved each season. Now, on the verge of starting (assuming Jae Crowder is out of the picture), he's also on the verge of a contract extension with the team.
He became eligible this summer, but Kevin Durant and Deandre Ayton pushed those talks to the back of the line. Now with Ayton's ink still wet on the contract and Durant remaining in Brooklyn, talks have reportedly ramped up between the two sides to keep Johnson in the Valley.
Phoenix just went through a similar situation with Ayton last season, as he was eligible for a new deal to conclude his rookie contract but the Suns were unable to find middle ground, causing him to go into restricted free agency.
While there has been some worry from fans that a repeat of the drama may ensure, ESPN's Brian Windhorst said on "The Hoop Collective" he expects a deal to be done.
"I look at teams and I look at their ability to improve, and the Suns have assets. They own all their picks going forward, all their firsts, I think they own all their seconds and they have some pieces on the roster they can trade," said Windhorst.
"I've talked this week about how Jae Crowder is an available trade piece. Cam Johnson is coming off his third year, he's extension eligible, we'll see if that gets done. I think there's a good chance it will."
As far as potential compensation goes, we dove into what to expect out of a potential payday for Johnson back in June.
Details still need to be ironed out, but things are looking incredibly bright for the Suns and Johnson to continue a favorable partnership for all parties involved moving forward.
