Former Thunder Second Rounder Signed By the Suns

Oklahoma City's former point guard was picked up by the Suns on Sunday afternoon.

As Oklahoma City's rebuild reaches full circle, prospects from over the years are finding other homes. That's the case for former second round pick Theo Maledon, who was picked up by the Phoenix Suns on Sunday afternoon.

The 6-foot-4 floor general is in his fourth NBA season, averaging nearly eight points and three assists for his career. He was waived by Charlotte Hornets this week. Maldeon was originally selected by the Thunder in the 2020 NBA Draft and spent two seasons in Oklahoma City.

He had a promising rookie season for the Thunder, averaging 10.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists while playing heavy minutes for a young squad. He didn't improve during his sophomore season, though, and saw his numbers dip across the board. As the Thunder added legit prospects and continued to get better, Maledon's role diminished.

He was eventually traded to the Rockets and was waived before the 2022 season. Maledon was then picked up by the Hornets where he spent the last two seasons. He played 116 career games with the Thunder as the team was in rebuilding mode, and went on to play 57 games with the Hornets.

Ironically, Maledon scored his career-high and had arguably the best game of his career against the Suns. On April 2 of 2021, he poured in 33 points, five rebounds and three assists on 10-of-18, including five triples, as the Thunder lost to Phoenix.

He has always had potential, but has lacked consistency over the years. He has had his fair share of big games, but can't seem to score efficiently or stick around in one place.

The Suns are needy for depth, however, and have a supporting cast of serious shooters. If he can succeed anywhere, it would be in a place like Phoenix.
