How Cason Wallace Will Benefit By Learning From Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
For Oklahoma City’s newest lottery pick, there’s no better player to learn from. At practice last week, Cason Wallace was staying afterward on his own time putting in extra work with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Gilgeous-Alexander has become one of the best players in the NBA and he can share some of that knowledge with Wallace. Both players are Kentucky products and have a few similarities in their games. The main similarity, though, is the mindset, and how each player wants to get better and better.
SGA has added something new to his game with each passing offseason, and now, he's teaching Wallace that same thing. If Wallace can improve as the Thunder continue trending upwards, it'll only help Oklahoma City more. The team already has so much talent on the roster, and it feels like it's easy to forget about Wallace, the most recent draft pick.
“It was good, just seeing one of our lead players just getting in work after practice. You know, it’s refreshing knowing that everyone on the team wants to work — from the top of the roster to the bottom. Just getting work from him, I learn a lot and I still wanna keep learning from him.”
Wallace doesn't need to be a star in year one, and he may never need to be the go-to guy. If he can play smart team basketball and help the defense as a whole, he'll fit right in.
After practice, Wallace was working with Gilgeous-Alexander on shot creation, hitting turnaround jumpers and getting to certain spots on the court. His defense is a given, but if he can develop an offensive bag the sky is the limit.
One thing is for certain, though, Gilgeous-Alexander is the perfect player for Wallace to learn from.
