OKC Thunder: Cason Wallace Scouting Report

An in-depth breakdown on combo guard and tenth overall pick Cason Wallace.

Oklahoma City kept their streak of draft night trades alive last Thursday, trading up two selections to nab their guy in Kentucky guard Cason Wallace.

Wallace, who averaged 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in his time with the Wildcats, should be a seamless plug-and-play combo guard for the Thunder.

Inside the Thunder and Draft Digest writer Derek Parker broke down Wallace’s talents in an episode of his Heat Check series on YouTube, which can be found below:

Offensively, Wallace should fit like a glove in the OKC configuration.

With his combination of slashing, driving, passing and shooting, Wallace can also toggle seamlessly between both point guard and shooting guard, making his role with the current iteration of the Thunder a seamless one.

If Wallace is called upon to fire off open shots alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey and Jalen Williams, he’ll be able to do so. If he needs to run the point while those three rest, he’ll have the capability to do that, too.

And that's not accounting for his selling point: defense.

In short, Wallace is likely the best perimeter defender in the entire class, with a knack for hounding at the point-of-attack, as well as stifling off-ball defense, too.

Alongside Lu Dort and Chet Holmgren, Wallace will add another layer of versatility to an already strong defensive core.

Now, the Oklahoma City organization and fans alike will look to 2023 NBA Summer League to see Wallace alongside a host of other Thunder players. This year's Summer League runs from July 7 through July 17. Each team will play at least five games in Las Vegas.
