Three Takeaways from the OKC Thunder's Magnificent 3-Point Shooting Night in Golden State
It's not often you see a team as hot from 3-point range as the Oklahoma City Thunder were Thursday night.
Against a Stephen Curry and Draymond Green-less Golden State Warriors team, the Thunder shot 19-of-32 from behind the arc, nearly 60 percent. The Warriors had no solution to stop the plethora of 3-point makes, resulting in a 128-109 loss.
Isaiah Joe, Josh Giddey and Cason Wallace combined for 12 threes on 100 percent shooting, playing the biggest part in Oklahoma City's unbelievable shooting night.
Here are three takeaways from the high-scoring victory:
Feed the Hot Hand
Isaiah Joe was unstoppable last night.
The shooting guard has shown over the last couple seasons how elite of a 3-pointer he is, but his performance against Golden State was something else. Joe scored 23 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting night, leaving the Warriors stunned.
Joe became the first player in franchise history to shoot 100 percent from three on seven or more attempts, another layer to add to his 3-point shooting prowess.
When Joe is feeling the game like he did tonight, the Thunder has to feed him. He's the model 6th man, entering the game as a spark plug that can help jumpstart the Oklahoma City offense if it struggles.
Surely he gets into the NBA's 3-Point Contest this season...
OKC Can Still Score on an Off-Night from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Yesterday was far from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's best offensive performance, scoring 24 points on abysmal 6-of-21 shooting.
Even with an off-night from its best player, the Thunder supporting cast stepped up to fill in the missing production from the MVP candidate. Giddey provided an efficient 19 points, Jalen Williams scored 16 and rookie Chet Holmgren scored 13 on limited shot attempts.
As already mentioned, Joe's perfect shooting night also helped tremendously.
Due to how many dynamic players the Oklahoma City roster has, several players on any given night could go off for 20-plus points and takeover when the team needs it. Unlike earlier in the rebuild, the Thunder has the ability to win games when Gilgeous-Alexander isn't at his best.
Gilgeous-Alexander's ability to get to the free-throw line also helps when his shot can't fall, which was demonstrated by his 9-for-9 outing at the line against the Warriors.
The Thunder's Potential Placement in the West
After the win, Oklahoma City has an 8-4 record and stands at fourth place in the Western Conference.
Looking ahead at the rest of its schedule, the Thunder have potential to be in the top three of the conference in the next week.
Saturday the Thunder will rematch the Warriors without Curry and Green once again, play a struggling Portland Trail Blazers team on Sunday, and then return home to face another struggling Chicago Bulls team.
These are three games Oklahoma City will be favored in winning, which could give the Thunder its highest placement in the West in multiple years.
It was important for the Thunder to take advantage of a depleted Warriors roster, giving it big momentum heading into a relatively easy schedule in its next few games.
Oklahoma City will face Golden State for the third time already this season on Saturday, Nov. 18, in Chase Center at 7:30 p.m. CT.
