Thunder Draft: Cody Williams Provides Versatility in Oklahoma City

The Thunder could spend a first round pick on a rising college prospect who's the brother of budding star Jalen Williams.

Adding another Williams to the mix in Oklahoma City could make things wildly confusing. But if it's someone as talented as Colorado freshman Cody Williams, it's absolutely worth it.

Although the season is still new, Williams is off to a hot start. And it’s the exact start that would entice the Thunder: efficiency and a display of two-way athleticism.

He’s averaging 11.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists for the Buffaloes and shooting 58.3% from the floor and 42.9% from 3-point range. He’s had two efficient 17-point outings and has coupled those high scoring totals with efficient work on the glass. Williams brings a lot to the floor on both ends of the floor, too.

At 6-foot-8, 190 pounds the former five-star has optional versatility up and down the lineup — another thing Oklahoma City values. He can defend multiple positions and doesn’t need the ball in his hands to make a play on offense. His skill set feels perfect for the NBA.

On top of his on-court talent, Williams seems like the kind of person the Thunder would target. Sam Presti has built a team that meshes well together and excels in the chemistry department. He has a good head on his shoulders and is very close with his brother, Jalen Williams, who’s a budding star in Oklahoma City. Pairing the two would be fun for the brother-duo but also beneficial for the Thunder on the floor.

Having Williams would just add to the Thunder’s growing chemistry and give the team another young guy to rally around and mold in the NBA. Oklahoma City has proven to go after lengthy wings that provide positional versatility and Williams fits the bill. It’s a good fit both on and off the court.
