Thunder's Jaylin Williams Can Be a Game Changer Off the Bench

Oklahoma City's second year big man can have a big impact off the bench after gaining valuable experience a season ago.

Jaylin Williams, Oklahoma City's second round selection in 2022, exceeded all expectations a season ago.

The Arkansas product was forced into the starting lineup for the majority of the Thunder's breakout season and held his own all year long. With Chet Holmgren injured and Oklahoma City's makeshift center Kenrich Williams going down, the team leaned heavily on the rookie center.

It wasn't all perfect, but he showed promise as a role player and exceeded immediate expectations of a second round pick. He averaged 5.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists in just 18 minutes per game. The biggest positive, though, is that Williams drained 40.7% of his triples. He was not a 3-point shooter in college, but immediately developed a reliable jump shot with the Thunder.

Now entering his second professional season, last year's experience is invaluable. Williams can be a serious asset off the bench in Oklahoma City, and can develop into one of the best backup big men in the league.

His offseason improvement has already been on display in the Thunder's preseason battles, and Sunday was his best game yet.

The Thunder rested its starters before the team simulates regular season lineups over the final two games, and Williams looked like Oklahoma City's best player. He played 23 minutes and poured in 18 points, nine rebounds and three assists. J-Will was efficient, going 7-of-10 from the floor and 2-of-4 from behind the 3-point line.

Oklahoma City has a handful of elite off-ball slashers, which is why Sam Presti has targeted versatile playmakers on offense. Williams can really pass the rock for a big man and his basketball I.Q. shines every time he's on the floor. He can open up so many opportunities for the Thunder's high flyers.

On the flip side, it's a known fact that Williams is one of the top charge takers in the NBA. He's a very smart defender that can take some of the blows from physical centers to keep Holmgren up right.

If nothing else, his energy and hustle will change the game most nights. He's one of the most underrated players on Oklahoma City's roster.
