Report: Anthony Edwards 'not seriously hurt' after scary fall
The word on the street from Timberwolves insider Jon Krawczysnki is that Anthony Edwards did not suffer a major injury when he crashed hard on his right hip during Minnesota's 106-103 win over the Thunder.
"It certainly looked bad when he fell, trying to dunk and one of the Thunder guys got underneath him and he just really landed hard on his hip," said Krawczynski on Wednesday's episode of The Jon Krawczynski Show.
"When we saw him after the game he was in very good spirits. They won the game, Anthony Edwards was joking around, just kind of telling guys, 'Hey, enjoy it while it lasts because now you get some shots up but when I come back those shots are going away.' That kind of stuff. Very playful, very good-natured."
Edwards suffered the injury with 3:33 left in the third quarter. He stayed on the ground in obvious pain for several moments before hitting one of two free throws awarded to him on the play. But when five-on-five play resumed, he was struggling to move and he was ultimately helped off the court and taken to the locker room.
He returned to the bench with under 10 minutes to go in the game but never returned, with the team saying he suffered a right hip contusion.
"He's not seriously hurt," Krawczysnki continued. "No one believes that it's going to be an extended absence for Anthony Edwards. Would it surprise me if he missed Thursday at Utah and maybe another one coming up? No, it wouldn't surprise me because I'm sure he woke up on Wednesday morning very, very sore. I think that it would make sense that the Timberwolves will get some more tests done on Edwards just to kind of check it out and make sure everything is OK, but I think he avoided, from all indications, he avoided any kind of a major injury. Maybe he misses Thursday against Utah, maybe Saturday against Charlotte. I don't know, we'll see."
The 13-4 Timberwolves, sitting atop the Western Conference, host Utah Saturday and play at Charlotte on Saturday. If Edwards misses both games the next opportunity to return will be Wednesday, Dec. 6 against the San Antonio Spurs. That would give him a full week to possibly avoid playing without pain.
How Edwards suffered the hip contusion is similar to the how rookie Leonard Miller suffered a similar injury in a G League game a couple of weeks ago. Miller did not miss extended time with his hip contusion.
"The one thing about Anthony Edwards is he seems to be a fast healer and get back in the game quickly. I remember last season he had a similar fall against Milwaukee and I thought, 'Oh there's no way he's playing the next game' and he ended up playing the next game against Detroit," Krawczynski continued. "He has toughness, he wants to play, he wants to get out there. But I would imagine that he's going to be pretty, pretty sore and that the Wolves will probably not try to push anything with him this early in the season because he's so important to what they do."
