Klay Thompson Gets Honest on Free Agency With Warriors
The Golden State Warriors have their biggest game of the season tonight against the Sacramento Kings. For Klay Thompson though, the urgency doesn't stop quite there.
After this season, Klay Thompson will be an unrestricted free agent, as he's on an expiring $43.2 million contract. When asked about the looming free agency before the game, Thompson gave a very candid answer and tried brushing it off.
“Nah. That’s life, man," Thompson said about tonight potentially being his last game with the Warriors. "Had so much success here not gonna let whatever happens in the future make me salty about what I’ve been able to accomplish in a Warriors uniform. I don't let that seep in at all."
This season, Klay Thompson is averaging 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists on 43/39/93 shooting. He hasn't averaged numbers this low since the second year of his career during the 2012-2013 NBA season. It's been a tumultuous season for Thompson as well, one that saw him get moved to the bench, and then back into the starting lineup.
While Thompson is still a very solid player, it'll be hard to justify a contract at the same level he's currently getting. If Thompson is going to return to the Warriors, he'll have to take a much smaller contract than what he's currently getting. Hopefully, tonight won't be his final moment in a Golden State Warriors jersey.
