Is Daniel Gafford Being Underutilized?
Despite the NBA being all about scoring and shooting the three ball efficiently, having a big man is important in today’s game. All of the playoff teams have good bigs. The Milwaukee Bucks have Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Denver Nuggets have Nikola Jokic and the Philadelphia 76ers have Joel Embiid. Bam Adebayo is playing in Miami for the Heat and Karl Anthony Towns along with Alperen Sengun are helping their teams out tremendously thus far this season as well. Having good quality bigs is important but giving them the opportunity to be productive is even more important. That’s why the San Antonio Spurs drafted Victor Wembamyama.
All of those Centers are being used for their respected teams. They are all in the top ten in the league for shots attempted per game. Their usage is what helps their teams win games. Daniel Gafford for the Washington Wizards has been playing solid all season. He is shooting 73% from the field this season. With a field goal percentage like that, you would think he would get more of an opportunity. However, he is only averaging four shots per game ranking 28 of 43 among other eligible centers in the league. To make matters worst, Gafford is starting for the Wizards and ranks ninth on the team in shots attempted per game.
No wonder the Wizards are struggling this season. It’s almost like he isn’t a part of their offense. The Wizards are giving their opponents a break on the defensive end as if they are playing four on five basketball. Washington HAS to figure out a way to showcase and incorporate Daniel Gafford more into their offense. They have to get him involved. They can even be creative with using him. He doesn’t have to take a 20 shots per game. But incorporating him into their offense rather he’s running the floor as a ball handler and getting assists or used more in pick and rolls will give this team a much needed boost in their offense.
