There’s always been a special bond between the Washington Wizards and their WNBA counterparts, the Washington Mystics. That started to become evident when Bradley Beal and John Wall were frequently onsite during the 2019 WNBA Finals to witness the Mystics win their first championship.

That support continued with Russell Westbrook, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Kyle Kuzma making appearances at Mystics games throughout the past few seasons. When the Mystics took on the New York Liberty on Friday in their season opener in D.C., several current members of the team were on-hand to include Coach Wes Unseld Jr., Bradley Beal, and Anthony Gill.

After the game, Mystics forward Elena Delle Donne acknowledged the Wizards presence, noting that they are a family. With both teams practicing at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Southeast D.C., Delle Donne went on to share that Wizards players have even stayed around to watch them practice.

The Mystics went to work in front of a sold-out crowd at their home opener. After shaking off some first quarter jitters, it was evident they were finding their stride.

Defense has been an issue in past seasons, but they managed to hold the Liberty to 64 points, dominating on both ends of the floor. They ultimately went on to defeat the Liberty 80-64.

In addition to Wizards players cheering them on, the rest of the Mystics 6th man was also in full effect. The fans were loud and the energy was undeniable. After the game, Natasha Cloud discussed how they feed off the support of the fans.

“We got the best fans in the W and that’s on period. The DMV is something different. Since I’ve been here for eight years, I’ve felt nothing but love and support.”

If this season is anything like past seasons, the Mystics can expect fans to continue to show up in droves and this won’t be the last time their Wizards family makes an appearance.
