Wizards Search For New General Manager is Unusually Quiet
Its been a couple of weeks since Ted Leonsis, Founder, Principal Partner, Chairman & CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment abruptly let go of Washington Wizards President & General Manager Tommy Sheppard. In these situations, a flurry of information about next steps and rumors about who will fill the vacant position typically follows the announcement of such a bold move. However, in the Wizards case, it has been unusually quiet.
Can you hear the crickets?
There was no press conference from Leonsis assuring Wizards fans that he would find a replacement to fit the vision of the team moving forward and no further explanation about his decision. Besides this statement from Leonsis after Sheppard’s firing, there has been nothing.
“Tommy Sheppard was relieved from his duties as General Manager and President of the Washington Wizards,” Leonsis said. “Failure to make the playoffs the last two seasons was very disappointing to our organization and our fans.”
With the NBA Draft lottery quickly approaching, Wizards fans have no idea who will be making key offseason roster decisions. It can only be assumed that Coach Wes Unseld, Jr. will have more say in the makeup of his team next season. But once again, that is only an assumption.
According to Wizards reporter Josh Robbins of The Athletic, it has been confirmed through a source that the Wizards will not hire a search firm to identify candidates for their vacant GM/President of Basketball Operations role. The question now becomes what is their plan?
