Young Explosive Guard Hits The Market
Rebuilding in the NBA can definitely become a project. In a rebuild, it can be hard at times to be patient. When you see teams swinging at bat at every pitch, you sometimes think maybe we should swing a little bit more as well. Maybe we should be aggressive and take more chances. Honestly speaking, when you take chances like that, the numbers speak for themselves. You have a 50 percent chance of hitting a home run. On the other side of that, you also have a 50 percent chance of striking out and hurting your team in the future for the long haul.
The Houston Rockets have traded away G Kevin Porter Jr. to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder are immediately planning on waiving Porter making him a free agent.
It was reported that Kevin Porter Jr. had a domestic abuse charged against him. His status of availability to play in the NBA right now are up in the air. While his court case hearing is still ongoing, so is the discipline he will receive from the NBA. It sometimes can be good for teams to take chances on talents such as Porter’s when they are undergoing legal cases. Teams can basically sign players fifty cents on the dollar when that happens. But the question is should the Washington Wizards consider signing Kevin Porter Jr. now that he is an unrestricted free agent?
At age 23, Porter has shown the entire world that he is NBA material. He has shown the ability to score the basketball. He can shoot the three ball pretty well too. He does a really good job attacking the basket both in the halfcourt and on the open floor with a fastbreak ahead of him. He is so quick and dynamic, he instantly evolves the offense because he also is a crafty defender. Standing tall at 6’4, 200 pounds, he has the ability to play multiple positions. With an outstanding 6’9 wingspan, after getting deflections and steals, he can instantly turn those forced turnovers into buckets on the other end for the team.
While he would pair extremely well next to Jordan Poole and Kyle Kuzma, the Washington Wizards should not sign Kevin Porter Jr. This is a new team with a new roster, a new coaching staff, and a new front office. The goal is to be drama free and grow organically. Porter would certainly cause a distraction, especially with his trial still going on. The Wizards pride themselves on professionalism and taking care of business in a dignified and classy manner. Second chances are well deserved in life. Kevin Porter Jr. certainly deserves a second chance. However, now would not be the right time for the Wizards to sign him.
