The 1999 season remained the best in Jacksonville history. The team lost only three games (all of which were to the Titans, including the AFC Championship Game) and strung together a 11-game winning streak, which remains a franchise record. The dominance of the team was demonstrated in the AFC Divisional Playoffs against Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins. It would be the last game of Marino's career, as the Jaguars throttled the Dolphins 62-7 in Jacksonville. The Jags had four touchdowns go for 38 yards or more, including scoring runs of 90 and 39 yards from Fred Taylor. The Jaguars played backup quarterback Jay Fiedler in the second half, who threw for two long touchdowns in the third quarter. Fiedler would leave the Jaguars for Miami the next year to become Marino's successor.

The Jaguars were 12.5 point underdogs against a powerful Denver Broncos side featuring John Elway, Terrell Davis, Ed McCaffrey and Shannon Sharpe. It was just the second season in franchise history, yet the Jaguars rode the efficiency of quarterback Mark Brunell and the powerful running of Natrone Means to stun the Broncos 30-27 at Mile High Stadium and advance to the AFC Championship Game just one year after their inaugural season.

Facing a 4th and 2 from the Pittsburgh 43 and down 29-28 with 1:56 remaining, David Garrard took a draw right at the Pittsburgh defense and hustled 32 yards all the way to the Pittsburgh 11. Josh Scobee hit a 25-yard field goal three plays later to clinch the AFC Wild Card win over the Steelers.

In a major upset, Jacksonville is awarded an NFL expansion franchise over the bids of Memphis and former NFL cities Baltimore and St. Louis. Jacksonville had previously failed in efforts to lure the Baltimore Colts and Houston Oilers to move to north Florida.

It was his only season in a Jaguars' uniform, but former Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard catches the game-winning touchdown pass from Mark Brunell, and Jacksonville wins the first game in franchise history, 17-16, over the Houston Oilers.

David Garrard and the Jaguars had one more play in a 24-24 tie against the Houston Texans before going to overtime. Garrard heaved up a prayer from around midfield that was batted down by Houston's Glover Quin... but right into the hands of Jags' receiver Mike Thomas. The miraculous Hail Mary gave the Jags the win and was announced by none other than Gus Johnson.
