In the midst of a stellar game against the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans quarterback Jake Locker had to be carted off the field on Sunday with what is being called a right hip injury. Ryan Fitzpatrick replaced Locker at quarterback.
Locker's injury occurred when he was hit by the Jets' Muhammad Wilkerson after throwing a pass in the third quarter. Locker fell into Quinton Coples, spun around, then fell to the turf awkwardly and immediately reached for his hip. The Tennessee QB barely moved as a trainer held his leg; Locker was quickly placed on a stretcher and taken off the field.
There was no penalty on the play.
Prior to exiting the contest, Locker threw for 149 yards and three touchdowns, as the Titans raced out to a 24-6 lead. Locker has been excellent thus far in 2013, throwing for six touchdowns to zero interceptions. In the process, the Titans have announced their presence as a contender in the AFC South -- only a late Houston comeback in Week 2 stands between Tennessee and an undefeated record.
Fitzpatrick started 15 games for the Bills last season, then signed with Tennessee as a free agent. Once thought to be a possible franchise QB in Buffalo, Fitzpatrick compiled just a 19-31 record and he threw a combined 39 interceptions over his final two seasons there.
The Titans host 4-0 Kansas City next week, before back-to-back games at Seattle and versus San Francisco.
