Dwayne Bowe arrested for speeding, marijuana possession, will play Sunday

UPDATE (10:55 a.m. ET): A team source told ESPN's Ed Werder on Wednesday that Bowe will play against the Denver Broncos on Sunday despite his arrest. Per the terms of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, teams may not suspend players for violations of the league's substance-abuse policy; the NFL may do so once the case is adjudicated.

Bowe's lawyer, Kevin E.J. Regan, maintains that his client is "100 percent innocent."

“My investigation reveals that Dwayne Bowe is unequivocally, 100 percent innocent in this matter,” Regan said in a statement released to the Kansas City Star. “We look forward to clearing his good name at our earliest opportunity."

Riverside, Mo., police confirmed to Kansas City television station Fox 4 that Kansas City Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe was arrested on Sunday for speeding and possession of a controlled substance.

According to the news report sent out by the police, Bowe was stopped for driving 48 mph in a 35-mph zone. While questioning Bowe, the officer detected a strong marijuana odor coming from Bowe's car. A K-9 search of the car turned up two containers in a black bag that had 6.6 grams and 3.8 grams of what was believed to be marijuana. A black backpack with 4.2 grams of what was believed to be marijuana was also found.

Bowe's passenger, George A. Thompson, told police that the backpack was his. A search of Thompson's person revealed two marijuana cigarettes. Bowe and Thompson were taken to the Riverside Police Department. Bowe was charged with speeding and possession of a controlled substance, and Thompson for possession of a controlled substance. The third passenger in the car, who was unidentified, posted bond for both men -- $750 for Bowe, and $500 for Thompson. Both men now have a court date of Dec. 18 -- three days after the Chiefs face the Oakland Raiders on the road.

The Chiefs issued a statement Tuesday saying they were aware of Bowe's arrest and that they have no further comment at the moment. The team is coming off its bye week and faces the Broncos in Denver on Sunday.

Bowe, Kansas City's first-round draft pick in 2007 out of LSU, signed a five-year, $56-million contract with $26 million guaranteed in March 2013. The contract contains a $15 million signing bonus and the guarantee of Bowe's 2013 and '14 base salaries. He served a four-game suspension in 2009 for a violation of the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Bowe's agent, Todd France, said in an e-mail to the Associated Press at the time that Bowe had taken a diuretic intended for weight loss.

In the 2013 season that has seen the Chiefs go undefeated from last year's 2-14 record, Bowe has been a relative non-factor. He has 33 receptions on 58 targets for 369 yards and two touchdowns this season. He hasn't scored a touchdown since Week 4 against the New York Giants. Still, he seems happy about his team's winning ways.
