The Chicago Bears are attempting to trade veteran defensive end Julius Peppers, but a trade would seem unlikely at this point, reports ESPN.com's Adam Schefter.

Peppers, 34, had 46 total tackles, seven sacks and two forced fumbles last season for the Bears. It was his lowest sack total in three seasons.

Peppers played his first eight seasons with the Carolina Panthers before coming to the Bears in 2010 after signing a six-year, $84 million contract, with $42 million guaranteed.

Peppers is scheduled to make $13.9 million in salary next season and his salary cap number is $18.183 million. At that salary, Peppers would be a prime candidate to be released unless a restructuring of his deal can be worked out.
